Great interview. I think the z7iii should come out in two varieties a 36MP great allrounder except for very fast action. And a z7iii HR 65mp beast in a slightly chunkier body. Z8, z9 are already 45mp. Z5 should be a video beast with active cooling than can do photos.

I think the Z 28-400 mmm is an excellent choice for travel. Several years back I traveled through Kashmir with my old D800 and just one lens, the AF-S Nikkor 28-300 mm f3.5-5.6 G. It performed really well, both with photo and video - even giving excellent photos in low, evening light on the lake at Srinagar, our starting point. So, now That I am older and somewhat less mobile, I bought the Z 28-400 for a trip with my Z8 to Washington State and the Olympic National Park. It did not disappoint, and I consider it to be the ideal replacement for my old travel kit. The weight is nothing to worry about. The lens attached to the camera fits perfectly into an easy access inflatable camera bag (approx. 8x10x5 inches) which hangs crosswise on a strap across my chest. When I travel I put the camera in a backpack with other non-photo stuff, deflate the small camera bag and roll it up so it doesn't take up much room in my luggage. When I arrive at the destination, I can quickly inflate the bag for carrying around and don't need to take the backpack with me to towns or museums where it would be a cumbersome inconvenience.

is it possible to simply use an external light meter to get the correct values, ignoring the camera meter?

I just bought the 40mm f1.2 and it’s true that it makes a wonderful combo. I paid mine around 650€ so 3 times the price of the plasticky 40mm f2.0 but I can confirm it s worth changing for it : all,metal (including the bayonet… something Nikon seems,to have forgotten on its SE line…), a focus ring easy to use and to focus with the Zf, a one third of stops aperture ring as smooth as the other and the best : the optical performance : at full aperture to f2 it gives a wonderful light dispersion which reminds us the smoothness of the old lenses and starting at f2.8 it becomes crazy sharp. So it s a kind of best of the 2 worlds one lens. To summarize I would say it s the lens Nikon should have done for its Zf… And I hope a 28mm f 2.0 will be delivered shortly. These lenses are so pleasant to use and what a look !!!

Lots of focus on Zf, what about on others, e.g., Z6II? I would like to go back to manual lens, but don’t want to buy Chinese brand.

A Nikon LS5000 Coolscan produces a 4000 dpi image of a 35mm slide measuring 4000 x 6000 pixels at around 21 mbs. A camera scan with ES2 and D850 produces a 8256 x 5504 pixel file at 45 mbs. Surely the camera scan image is better than the scanner file?

Watching this stream late as usual and regarding the comments about the the 35 1.4 being a disappointment that it wasn't the 35 1.2 is mainly because the 1.2 was the last lens on the old lens roadmap and everyone expected it. Now in reality the f1.4 at it's price point is great for those on a budget but my opinion the 35 1.8 currently on sale for $100.00 more is a better lens, 2/3rds of a stop is irrelevant but the optical quality of the f1.8 is better, just compare the specs. along with better lens coatings. Personally they should have made the 35mm f1.4 a "S" series lens, my opinion.

Yes, fully agree. Nikon needs at least one Pro Camera in the Pro body with an integrated grip and no more than a 24mpx sensor. There is nothing to choose for wedding events sports or photojournalism. Not everyone needs 46mpx headache!.

We need Z6iii in the body of Z9. So far Z6iii is too small and not pleasant to work with.

I'm loving the Z6III. For me it surprised me in the capabilities they crammed into it thanks to the sensor. I love the silent shooting that's actually usable, small size, high frame rates with large buffer and blackout free shooting, and finally insane video specs. Remarkable. Regarding CF express cards, don't feel you have to buy one straight away. Stick with V90 SD cards until you can actually justify a crazy CF card. The buffer is still amazing with my Pro grade V90 SD card, and the camera can still record 4K 60 H265.

100% a lot of Zf owners were people who wanted a Z6III but didn’t want to wait. I think we will start to see the Zf get discounted very soon as it doesn’t look as good a value with the Z6III just $500 more. I’m hoping it drops to at least $1600, and then Nikon puts its guts into a Z5 body and sells that for $1600 Z5II 🤞

What's the current market share of Nikon? Will they gain back customers from Canon, Sony, FUJI? The current problem they have is the outdated APS-C (DX) camera line. Nikon should increase efforts for first time camera buyers that want to get into the Nikon system.

I love my 24-120 f/4!! Seth sold me on that one in store.

The 35 1.4 will be on my wish list, however if Nikon dropped a super wide 14 or 16 then that would go to the top of my list. My next for sure lens is the 100-400.

Talking about trading to upgrade, I traded my Z6II and Z7 for a Z8, then when the Zf came out I got it for my EDC.

Just received my Z6III this morning and going to be testing it out tomorrow. I’m a wildlife bird photographer and been shooting with my Z6II. I decided to keep my Z6II as a backup unit.

Z50ii and Z5ii refresh would be the next logical step for Nikon. They can sell a lot more Z5's than Z7iii.

About the "pixel race". I have been working with the D4 and the Df for a long while and i still consider my D4 very capable for everything i need. I stopped chasing megapixels a loooong time ago now. And i actually was not even going to go into the Z system before i saw the Zf which i eventually bought as a "replacement" for my Df. And while it does not really replace my Df since i liked that sensor a lot more than the one on the Zf i do like the other things the Zf brings to the table. But more pixels wouldnt have helped me one bit. I really like the smaller files and have never needed to print larger than what a 24 can give me. I have an older Mac for PP and the smaller files are very welcome there. I think a lot of people have woken up by now when it comes to upgrading cameras, and understand that everything we have had for the last 10-15 years have been perfectly fine and actually had sensor and character and other capabilities the newer cameras seem to lack :) Of course there are always a lot of professionals etc that compete in other areas of photography where a faster and "better" tool is appreciated at all times. So i can see why they are stuck in that "ratrace" for the latest camera ;)

I now have both (as of today). Why can't we have an f/2 (or lower) prime pancake thats somewhere in the 20-28mm range ? That would be the ideal complement to the 40mm f/2.

I got my 14-30 from BB for fraction of the price, so I stick to it.

I've been very happy with the lens. I bought this to replace my f-mount 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 which is noticeably heavier and larger when you include the FTZ and hood. Like you mentioned, it's a little dark for an indoor lens, but if you're looking for an outdoor walkabout lens, then this is a fantastic option. It's a great storyteller lens, as you won't completely be blowing out any backgrounds at this aperture range, but you still get a nice subject separation. I definitely recommend it... matter of fact, I already sold my old 28-300.

Looks like another good walking-around lens. I've used a 24-200mm lens for years, and though it's great most of the time, I have occasionally been left wanting more on the telephoto end, especially when shooting outdoors at various events. This lens seems like a good fit for what I need. For hiking or walking long distances, probably not-I'd carry primes or much lighter zooms.

Can you declick it like the model on E and RF mounts?

Thank you both for an honest review. I have been anxious to hear your thoughts for some time now. Watching your review, I was thinking of the old saying, “A jack of all trades and master of none." I think it will be an excellent travel/hiking/kids sports kind of lens for many people, but maybe not for me, at least not right now.

I guess, like many things, it's a matter of use-case. You (Kon and Becky) love primes; me, not so much. This past week, I shot about 50,000 frames on a week-long project. Most were shot with the Z9 using a Nikon Z 70-200mm f2.8 S. I also used that camera with the Nikon Z 180-600. With the Z8, I mostly used the Z 24-120mm f4 S, but also used the Nikon Z 105mm f2.8 Macro lens. In my D850, Z6ii and Z7ii days I owned 3 or 4 primes, but (because of use-case) most of my frames were shot using zooms. While I have the Nikon Z 24-200mm lens, I think I may purchase the 24-400mm lens and perhaps give the 24-200 to one of my daughters. My opinion is that the Nikon zoom lenses that I have used are so sharp and versatile, that primes are a luxury that I'm not convinced I would use that much.

It's a significant improvement over the F mount 28-300mm; it is sharper and has faster autofocus. When zooming, it acts like an air compressor, moving plenty of air over the memory card slots. I will be interested to see if all this air movement results in more sensor dust over time. Overall, I am happy with this lens, and it is great for travelling, especially now that our local airline is weighing all carry-on baggage and restricting us to 7kg.
